Alexander Stepanovich Popov is a Russian physicist and electrical engineer, one of the inventors of radio.
He was born on March 4 (16), 1859 in the village of Turyinsky Mines (now Krasnoturinsk, Sverdlovsk region).
After graduating from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of St. Petersburg University in 1882, he was engaged in scientific activities and taught physics and electrical engineering at a number of technical schools.
Popov's scientific interests lay in the field of electrodynamics. He set out to design a wireless alarm system for use in the navy based on electromagnetic waves.
On May 7, 1895, at a meeting of the physics department of the Russian Physico-Chemical Society, Popov presented a scientific report on the invention of wireless communication and demonstrated its work. In memory of this event, Radio Day has been celebrated in Russia since 1945 on May 7.
By improving the transmitting and receiving devices, Popov achieved a signal transmission range of 150 km.
Popov also studied X-rays and took the first X-ray images of objects and parts of the human body in Russia.
Popov's work was appreciated by his contemporaries, he received a Large Gold Medal at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900.
